The history of International Day of Yoga

 It was in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27 th September 2014 that India Prime Minister Narendra Modi put forward the idea of a global yoga day. Conciderating yoga as the comprehensive health care and well-being strategy, Modi proposed summer solstice 21 st of June as the perfect day because of spiritual and astronomical reasons.

The proposal was approved on 11th December 2014 by the UNGA with the highest number of co-sponsoring countries (177) and the theme of International Day of Yoga was commemorated first on 21 st June 2015 officially.

Why 21 st June?

The longest day in the Northern Hemisphere (the 21st of June) is known as the summer solstice and is supposed to be of great importance to yogis. This day is of significant importance in the Indian culture, as it is the starting point of Dakshinayana, which is a six-month time frame with spiritual beneficial impact on the change inside and meditation.

It is the legend that it is on this day that the Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the Adiyogi (the first yogi), started to teach his disciples the yoga which was called the Saptarishis.
